We have people on the forum with various levels of skill & experience, and I'm interested to see how long people have been learning and/or playing the accordion. I'm a definite newbie at 5 months!

I answered 1-2 years, although I have owned an accordion for probably 5 or 6 years, it only made it out of the cupboard once or twice a year until recently :D

i answered 2 years although one has been sitting in the wardrobe for 12 yrs or so - i occasionally played with it - i mean played with it as opposed to play it but around 2 yrs ago wanted to do the instrument justice and try to keep a family tradition going and actually play it

Well Pippa if you put it like that I also started the accordion when I was 15. My father bought a big old machine for me from a guy ar work. I played it for around 6 months and basically played by ear (no pun intended). Problem was, accordion wasn't going to get me a girlfriend so I swapped it for a guitar. That I gave to my brother because the guitar isn't an instrument I could understand. After that experience I still didn't have a girlfriend and it took me a fair few years before I saw the light.

Hahah! What kind of girl doesn't think the accordion is awesome...

Reminds me of a tune by Estonian band Tenfold Rabbit, they have an accordionist.. the lyrics go:

I remember her on the first row
She was staring at me so sweetly
I was sitting with my accordion
So I didn’t think I was cool enough

I want to message them and tell him I think the accordion is cool! {} My boyfriend might not be happy about that though :D

I put over 10 years (25 is closer for the PA) but only been playing (for the want of a better word - LOL) the CBA about 6 months

Just coming up to about 19 months....though about two months of that was without accordions {} {} 'cos they were in storage due to our recent move.....

I played the pa im the mid seventies for two years complete with extensive lessons. I gave it up and continued with piano. I'm back with a renewed passion.

I'm so glad to have found these forums and have already learnt a lot to help me on my accordion journey. Thanks for your great energy Pippa.

Nathem

I put less than 6 months but it is probably nearer 7 months now.

However, I think the length of time is not really that important.

What is important is that we all, both novices and experienced players, want to improve our understanding (of the instrument, music, techniques - whatever ) and want to share our experiences with others.

I bought my first box in July 2009. I do wish that I had discovered the accordion earlier, but where I grew up, it was only used for atrocities... [my apologies to all fans of German Volksmusik] I'm making up for the late start by playing obsessively, though.

You feel about Volksmusik the same way I feel about cheesy Scottish Dance band music probably for much the same reason , don`t get me wrong, I love the pipes (living in Wales for 40 years can`t drive that from me) and like solo Acc players like Will Starr but give me a good German Polka loaded with Steirisches and Bartones over a cheesy SCDB anyday of the week ..

That's a thought, whats a cheesy SCDB sound like? I may have played in one for years,we did play English folk as well.

Just for consideration - this survey has been running for over 6 months, so the the replies are now outdated. Is it worth starting it afresh and asking members to poll again?
