Free bass and treble buttons?

Are free bass buttons played similarly as treble buttons?

The free bass buttons are much smaller and closer together than the treble buttons. And on most accordion they are all on one plane, making it hard to impossible to use the thumb on bass buttons other than the outermost row. As a result you use different fingering on the free bass than on the treble side.
