Just got back from 10 days jamming at a couple bluegrass festivals. I was nervous being the lone PA player but every one was welcoming, though I sensed a little skepticism about an accordion joining in with the strings. My accompaniment skills seemed to fit nicely, (I kept the volume down) and they were surprised how well the lead sounded on my turn using the high reeds, no bass. I filled in like a fiddle would. I bowed out on a few tunes that I would call pure banjo bluegrass (like foggy mountain breakdown) I just couldn’t wrap my head around that type of fast finger roll melody. I seem to have a hard time picking out the melody when listening to a banjo. Lots of good people, mostly retired folk. My son, a fiddle player, said if I really wanted to fit in I should take off my shirt and just wear my pants and suspenders, he said I would look like a banjo player!
In a week is an old time music campout for 7 days, it’s more my kind of music. It’s called the Mule Barn in Port Townsend from the 28th of June till July 6th, by Fort Warden. Then there is the Washington Old Time Fiddle camp in Cashmere from July 27th to August 1st (my son and I went last year and had a great time!) then one more camp is the Centralia Campout (went last year, great time) from August 9th to the 17th, these camps are mostly old time music and the accordion has been welcomed. Getting to play with others is so much fun! If you come to one of these camps hunt me down, (I’m the accordion player with no shirt and suspenders!)
