The bayan accordion sound richer (brighter, more overtone, more harmonics, etc.) than the Italian accordion because of the multiple reeds united in a single long plate.

I own two genuine Russian bayans, the 3-row kind with lots of reed blocks, made in Ukraine at the time of the USSR, and both have individual reed plates with nails and wax! So it seems not all use (or used) long plates.
