Minimalism

Thanks for this interesting conversation. Lots of new composers for me to listen to.

Where would you all place Henryk Gorecki and John Tavener?

They both seem to tick many of the items from the BBC’s minimalism list and yet (for some reason) I don’t think of them as minimalist composers.

BTW, I always thought that Max Richter’s score for the 2019 film Ad Astra draws a lot from Ives’ Unanswered Question.

Hi Tomoko - great to hear from you. I also like Max Richter for film music. If you get a free bass accordion and want to learn any minimalism I'm happy to help as I've music for CBA / FB.

Wow!! Thank you for sharing your sample music sheets! I'm so glad to hear that☺️ I'm looking for a piano converter type of free bass, but it is difficult to find it in Japan, I'm thinking about buying new things from Germany or Italy. (used free bass accordions are so rare in my country..) If I get it, I want to do a cover Max Richter 's "Infra".

Hi Tomoko,

Happy to help. If you want to play minimalism then you really need a button converter accordion rather than a piano one. All the Glass, Richter and Pärt I play has frequent stretches in the right hand of an octave an a half which are easy on a button keyboard but nigh on impossible on the piano type. With minimalism playing the actual notes is more important as the texture is so minimal it doesn't do well from changing the notes to fit the hand. It kind of makes more sense for free bass too as then the right and left hands are in similar fingering system. I started on piano accordion too but managed to make the change so I could play the music I wanted to rather than trying to play a piano tipped on its side!

I'll listen to Infra - i think its a ballet score written for Royal ballet in UK.

great topic i came across a small piece by pert thats doable on free base also he wrote a waltz for accordion with stradella base. very nice it is.
