Can someone explain please (I'm sure its been mentioned before) how this proper position is different to just standing the accordion on its feet? I'm puzzled as the majority of reeds on a cassotto accordion aren't in cassotto -should we hang them diagonally? :)

As I understand it, the goal is to not store any reed horizontally; in the horizontal position, (half of) the leathers are supported only at one end and feeling the full effect of gravity.

That gives you two other orientations that are acceptable: you can orient the reeds straight-up-and-down, or you can stand them on edge. In this case they are still supported at one end and feeling the whole effect of gravity, but their whole width resists the bending, vs. only their thickness when horizontal.

In the playing position, all of the reeds are on edge, i.e., all in their second-best orientation.
Standing on the bass feet, the non-cassotto reeds are vertical, the cassotto reeds are horizontal.
 
Cheers for link - I knew I'd seen it somewhere. I wonder why the leading instrument makers don't put feet on the edge of Cassotto accordions then rather than at the end to avoid the problem ever arising!

Have I got this right below then please for Cassotto storage?

I would just be speculating. But I could imagine that the builders look at reed leathers as wear parts, and expect they should be replaced before this is really an issue.
 
The “good” position is what is agreed upon as being the bestbest position to at least delay valve sag is in playing position, at least that is what all the “experts” say. :)

Although one (the Paolo Soprani) is stored at a friend's house as it's up for sale.

In reality I have one rattling around with me in the van (the 45 SPECIAL).
 
Last time this subject came up, I used it to successfully convince the better-half of the need of another box ('tuna #2). Of course, I only had one 'tuna, a Victoria and the Soprani... Plus, I had to agree to trade the Vicky in towards the new 'tuna (turned out to be the "Killer Accordion"). I don't think it'll work again.?☹️
