Hello there. Ive been lurking a bit since I joined as was waiting to get my accordion and getting started before posting.

I first received an accordion as a gift about 24 years ago...a dud Hohner Atlantic III Special which needed more work than was worth it. I still have it...its green with mould and the metal is covered in what I would optimistically call pattina. I couldnt bear to get rid...and it gets a sad airing now and again... but everything plays at once. Just beyond repair.

I have always wanted to play, but due to studying Piano and Double Bass, it was always on a back burner. This back burner being a wee niggling nagging burble that has frequented my thoughts repeatedly ever since. All the bands I listen to feature accordions...Gogol Bordello, They Might Be Giants, Alabama 3 and many more...as well as the classic, wet musette sound of Jimmy Shand and the cleaner tuned tones of Frankie Yankovic. On my Spotify last year, Weird Al was my most listened to artist (first time Ive really gotten into him - love his accordion playing).

I guess what Im really trying to say is that I LOVE the Accordion and have finally sourced an instrument which has turned out to be an early Christmas and birthday present for the next two or so years!

Its a Sonola Polka King Accordion made just before or after Sonola themselves got bought out by Guerrini...sometime in the eighties oh well, I dont know. I sourced a teacher (former Scottish Champion!) as I really want to make the best effort in learning correctly and have had 2 lessons of which I enjoyed immensely. I cant put the accordion down much to my Fiancee and my dogs disappointment and am currently awaiting for my book of Christmas Accordion Hits to arrive. :D Anyway....thats me. I have had sugar and caffeine, so I apologise for being excitable. Hello and nice to meet you.

I love my sparkles btw, but I worry its not very manly.

Welcome to the forum. I presume you are aware of the box and fiddle clubs throughout Scotland which may provide useful contacts etc. If not try http://www.boxandfiddle.com

Hi George and thank you. Yes I am aware. It's where I found my teacher too so hoping to get more involved there too once my playing is more on an even keel.

Hi Meerkatdawg,
Welcome to the gang - there's some good ones here and you will learn a lot.
What part of Scotland do you bide in? We have a few in here from the borders up. I am a weegie who moved to Aberdeenshire some 12 years ago and visited our local box & fiddle club. I got hooked at the age of 62, bought a box and some books then found me a teacher (who was also a Scottish champion) - Although I no longer take lessons, I have struggled happily ever since.
I am also now, an expert purchaser of dud accordions but it is good fun. If you want to see detailed photographs of the insides of an Atlantic (1V) then just ask - Beautiful boxes.

Hi Meerkatdawg, Welcome - great intro love the look of the Polka King. Other than the décor, do you know what attributes make it a Polka King?

Hi Garth. Thanks!

Im in North East Aberdeenshire. About as East as you can get I suppose. Lol. Maybe the same teacher! There arent many around here...that I could find.

I would love to see the insides of an Atlantic IV. I was looking at them before I bought the Sonola, but I couldnt justify stretching to as much as that so Id be really interested in the pics. Nice to meet you.

Hello there and thanks. Nope...I know nothing more than just the decor and the name on it which may be possibly the only difference. Its musette tuned and thats about the length of my knowledge sadly. Nothing I can find online either...only info on Guerrini models.

Greetings indeed.
Looks like a super accordion.
Who ever said an accordion had to be manly?
Be proud of your feminine side :b

Hi not sure how this works, Greetings from me, just joined a few minutes ago, I have been play in the accordion for about 60 years and have had 6 0r 7 different ones , at present I have a Beltuna Leader v which I like very much .and I have a new or almost new Roland fr-8x that I purchase a few months ago only played it for a couple of hours but have decided to sell it if any one is interested !

Hi curtis: and as most of us here say "Welcome". If I may ask, I must say I'm puzzled by your post. Purchasing a new Roland FR-8x is a considerable out of pocket expense, and to only play it for two hours in a few months period is just, well, questionable? Can you expand on your reasoning??

Hi Curtis.
Like Jim I too am curious as to why you want to sell your Roland so soon.
I plan to get one in the new year and your post worries me quite frankly.

Far fetched comments tend not to worry me, but do irk my curiosity.

Hello from another Aberdeenshire member. Its a good place this!
