I have access to a Paolo Soprani accordion with the bass buttons depressed. I can get it cheap but do not know how hard it is to attempt repairs myself. Tried some searches on line but did not find any instruction on how to fix it other than take the bass section apart and re-align the buttons. Is it that simple?

Impossible to say: it can be a relatively easy fix (say 15 minutes of fiddling) and it can also be hopeless if a lot of things are bent out of shape. I hope you end up being in the former situation.

A depressed bass machine at times can be only caused by bent buttons on their pistons and only a few slipped off their pins.
And then there is the possibility the bass machine is been damaged and has come off its mounting and in many cases will total the boxs value.
If you dont have knowledge of the working of a stradella bass machine - its a gamble. Much like buying a good looking auto that wont start.

To see what might be involved see here --- http://www.accordionrevival.com/ACCORDION_REPAIR_2.php#Disassembling_a_bass_machine

Paolo Soprani's have well made bass machines but will not come out in one piece - they have to be taken out piece by piece.

It would be good if you could get hold of someone who has a bass mechanism similar to yours, you need to post a good photograph

I do not own the accordion....someone local is selling it but it is about 60 miles away from where I live. Wondering if it is even worth the drive. I am trying to get it really cheap and use it to learn how to work on one. See what happens....just made him an offer.

if its really cheap its probably well worth buying not only as a box to learn repair technique on but because it may turn out to be a bargain if you do manage to repair it. To me cheap would be a 'spare parts only' price so start very low!
