Hi,
Well a very interesting set of comments .... though of cause for me its not a matter of looks so it would make no difference what one i have of the many lovely accordions even though i have two. ...its....well you all know ,
to say the least and :tdown: to playing just one. a bit like doing pic's on the forum.useless, oh well....

As a proud owner of a bit of 80s sparkly bling I do think a sense of humour helps.
The as long as its black may be trying to make our instruments look more serious.
Is there a gentle trend away from the austere?

I like colourful accordions in the right setting, e.g. for Morris - my Student is red with orange bellows, and I find it rather flattering as it distracts from some of my bulges and also hides any breakfast stains on the white shirt. However, it does look very worrying under a raincape, like a noisy pregnancy.

Excellent use of bellows - oh wait....! And I thought we were talking about accordion aesthetics, not accordionist aesthetics!
Leaving aside the humour and in a spirit of fair-mindedness (ie before somebody else notices) that must be THE worst Roland ad' for its v-accordions. There might as well be no bellows - I'm guessing it's set to "fixed" for some reason.
Back on topic:
For the historians - while the rest of the world was enjoying things like The Mallard locomotive, streamlined furniture and other things deco, how come that seems to have been the time for ultra-bling accordions and square "shoulders?"

According to a recent telly program, apart from overt displays of wealth, one of the main reasons for gilt ornamentation was to brighten a room back in the days of candlelight. Maybe this idea held on with accordions, being played in dives and bars. It must cost the makers quite a lot to add.
Show Biz Glitz would also have dictated the "snazzing" up of the accordion too, surely....was it not the twenties and thirties that gave us the glitter ball...sequinned cowboys and other things that we now view with mildly amused disdain........?

I think the Serenellini wooden accordions look great and they sound great too. I have one of these and the tone is beautiful.

Yep, that Serenellinis another very appealing one. Quite desirable.
However, on the Transatlantic Session I watched recently, Phil Cunningham played something that looked similar at first glance but turned out to be an imitation wood Manfrini. Its got to be one of the ugliest boxes Ive ever seen, like a 1970s sideboard! The Manfrini G-Plan model.

Yes very ugly but the Serennellini is lovely. Nice pearl keys too and the tone is softened by the wood - almost cassotto without the cassotto if you see what I mean. I think it looks great but the wood is vulnerable to bumps but I love it. Mine is swing tuned but I don't like the dry tuned - something is lost
