Lips has been a big name in concert bayan playing since the late 60s and apparently had some hand in the development of the first Jupiter and the Pigini Mythos. He is a big advocate of original compositions for accordion.

The seminar itself was mostly a review of Lips's experiences with watching the according become accepted as more than just a folk instrument in Russia. He spoke primarily in Russian through an interpreter.

The Accordionists and Teachers Guild recorded the session and will presumably make it available online sometime.

The most interesting part, in my opinion, was the Q&A at the end. Two or three of us sent him questions about how accordionists and composers interact and how composers can learn to write well for accordion. His answer to one of those questions led to the most memorable sentence of the hour:

He remembered that, when he first played Et expecto for Sofia Gubaidulina, she said to him "the accordion can breathe like no other instrument can." He contrasted it with a quote from Stravinsky: "I don't like organs; this monster doesn't breathe," and wondered whether Gubaidulina was deliberately referencing Stravinsky's remark or not.

The two quotes were really quite something. Apparently ATG is going to be doing more presentations from international figures every other month. I also spied a young attendee tinkering on his "Levsha" bayan whilst listening to the presentation.

Since you are from Wiscinsin, maybe you have heard of the moderator, Stas Venglevski. He was Lips' student in Russia and has a studio near Milwaukee. An incredible player.

Yes, a familiar name here in Wisconsin, well respected. I saw him perform last summer with Misha Litvin on mandolin. They are both great musicians and very personable.
