Something suitable for a boat

Hi all, I'd like to know if anyone has any views on what would be a suitable accordion take on a sailing trip. I currently have a Vignoni Ravel 96 which is wonderful vut a little heavy and not wanting it to be ruined by salty air or damp. Weight is a key thing so I'm looking at 72 base probably but onecthats weather friendly. Plastic valves? Ideas?

Check local listings like ebay, craigslist, facebook for a low priced beater that works, or requires minimal restoration. Try it in person. Functionality and cost of your beater beats brand, # of reeds, etc. If it falls overboard it's probably ruined. Buy a local beater, that's my advice.

I decided to go with an accordion I consider more or less expendable but is still functional while using a pelican case that should at least protect it well while not in use. After I see how that works for a few months I might reconsider options.

The acme accordion with stainless steel reeds looks intriguing, but those stainless steel reeds won’t protect against the instrument getting smashed when you lose your footing going up or down the companionway.

You never told us if you're planning to use the accordion as the anchor. ? ?

Yup! Something you don't have to worry about.

Ultimately I think you want something more or less expendable. But there is a point where something is so cheap that it is just too frustrating to play. That may be a hard thing to balance. You kind of have to do the math about the risk probability for your specific application and make a decision about what make sense.

What kind of sailing trip are going on? What’s the boat?

When I inquired most people thought an older German made hohnor Verdi or tango might be worth trying. Sounds like you have decent length trips in mind. Might be worth considering a case like I plan to use. I believe this will at least protect the instrument from high humidity when stored. Maybe this is less of an issue in a newer boat.

So, thanks for all the responses. With your help and a little research I've decided to buy a hohne Lucia , apparently one of the few accordions with a metal/allow box and also has plastic keys. The only wood are the Reed beds so minimising and damp issues. I'll give it a go and see how we get on.

I looked into this too. However, I have a 21 foot bowrider that gets pretty wet if there is even a tiny bit of chop. I may end up taking an organetto on board if I can find a nice waterproof case...and if I learn how to play the organetto. I would use it anchored at sandbars, so the biggest issue would be keeping it dry while under way. Then there is the issue of salt air, etc.

Late to the game but Black Diamond https://www.blackdiamondaccordions.com/ advertise their accordions being played on boats. They are also from West Mersea, and you don't get much more salty than that, it's local advice never to buy a car from there
