I think it's a 'stomp box' or 'foot tambourine' comparison. Hmm, if so, I like the first one better. Looks sturdy. Worst case scenario, if you don't like it... it will make a good bed for your pet hamster. You could get tiny wee pillows for it too. 
That said, the second one might also make a good (and rhythmic) vermin control device. Not that I'm casting aspertions on your gig venues.
