Hello Hugo,

Welcome to the forum.

There are a few Bayan players on this forum, and I feel sure that they will introduce themselves when they read about your interest.

You will also find quite a few button players on here, though I am not one of them.

Kind Regards,

Stephen.

Hi Hugo,

Welcome to the forum.

If you find another B system player in Scotland he'll likely either be a Norwegian, Belgian, Dutchman, or Russian on holiday!

Like you, I had played guitar for about 20 years before I started on C system CBA. No teachers within a reasonable distance meant buy the books and learn yourself, and there was nothing like You Tube where you could learn by watching. I haven't the first clue about Scottish accordion as it never quite captured my interest. There were some CBA players around the western, (and later central part) of Scotland where I then lived, but I wouldn't have said "a lot".

Only B system teacher I knew in the whole of the UK at the time I started (about 1985) was John Leslie who ran the shop "Accordions of London". I actually considered changing over to B system after I realised that most of the French and Belgian musette players I liked played that system. However, finding a suitable instrument anywhere in the UK at that time was just about impossible before the internet opened up potential sources, so I stuck with C system.

Self taught was more like "self fought" and I found it a struggle. Problem I had was trying to force myself to slow down in the learning process. I wanted to be as good on the accordion as I was on the guitar almost right away, if "good" was the right word. Every time I picked the box up I resolved to follow the exercises in the books to the word. However, having a modicum of musical experience, I started to "invent" wee tunes that fell naturally to where my fingers wanted to go rather than where they should have been, and unfortunately I never really broke that habit. I managed to "nail" a handful of French musette standards, and 30 odd years later that's about where I still am. I can't cope with large audiences so I have to sometimes turf the two cats out of the bedroom so I can play in peace. My wife won't stay in the same floor of the house as me while I'm playing, and my neighbours have only threated to burn my accordions and/or break my fingers on relatively few occasions.

Bayan conveys to me "serious study" of classical type music, which is way beyond my experience. As far as I know there are two or three other forum members who play bayans, although at least one of them plays a C system bayan he had built in Russia to that system. You may get a somewhat more sensible conversation out of them.

I'm sure that, regardless of your choice of instrument and/or musical preferences, you'll find plenty of interesting topics on here.

Doesnt work for me. Persistent scratching at the door is worse of a disturbance than a cat bouncing around. Unless it bounces around too much.

Consider yourself lucky. For me its anyone of the commune and the whole house. At least there have been no threats of violence yet.

Watched the video. Nice playing but couldn't hear or see a cat connection. I'll watch it again when the TV and the wife are both switched off.

Our two aren't really bad door scratchers, but one of them loves nothing better than to leap onto my shoulders unannounced, and he is about 6 kilos so you sort of know he's there. He also loves playing the guitar by pawing and biting the strings. The other one will sit patiently at my feet incognito until he decides he wants fed or to go out, then suddenly lash out and use my leg as a scratchpost until he gets what he wants. They are two brothers from the same litter but their personalities are very different. One is a heavyweight bully and the other is a silent assassin!

There are crackling noises (a cat scratching a reed chair). Then there is a crash. I am obviously looking slightly bemused in some particular direction. Obviously something is happening off-camera. Then there is a cat dashing through the picture in various directions. At the end there is a complaining meow.

Thanks,

Got it at the second attempt. I had to sort of skip through it the first time, as my wife kept talking about a TV programme she was watching.

Oops, just checked that video and I had conflated several in my memory. I think this was the third video in a row messed up by this cat (warranting my exasperation) but I definitely cannot be seen looking around for the cat since this video does not even show my head. So this might not actually be the worst affected one of the lot but it is not likely worth hunting through other videos just for the cat antics. Had they been an absolute deal breaker, Id likely not have put up the videos in the first place. At least I looked sort of amused then rather like my grimacing glare typical when playing undisturbed.

Should have said thought I heard the noises, but I still never actually saw a cat on the second take.

You are right: I checked the video here corresponding to the upload, and there are very brief appearances at about the 3:15 and 4:20 mark (the latter shortly before scratching noises I think) but this is nowhere near a badly affected video. So it was just titled out of exasperation that this cat again jumped in.

The description I gave is actually fitting for this video instead where the scratching starts at the 1:10 mark, the cat is seen dashing around a few times at 1:53 and at 2:30 there is a distinct bump. Also I am obviously looking around for the cat here.

Sorry for confusing those videos and disappointing expectations.
