Every once in a while I come across a gig that request line dances. I usually accommodate Live, but lately appears many organizations, especially Seniors, are attending Line Dance Courses. Learning Line dances to top 40 pop from a couple years and today’s hits? Hard to keep up! End up playing a couple recordings they know on breaks. I was amazed how it filled the dance floor! To make it easier, going to request the songs they line dance ahead of time, have the prerecorded music ready on the break. Or maybe avoid these gigs entirely?

My personal opinions on this... and remember, they're only opinions... either give them what they come there for and what they want, or as you said, avoid these kinds of gigs, but don't play pre-recorded music that they came for and are paying a live musician for... that's my thoughts. :)

I like your opinions. But sometimes the unexpected happens. Like this gig a couple days ago. Two hour gig, took my break...one of the associates asked to plug in IPhone to play certain songs on break. Fortunetly, I was able to download those songs on my IPad and make them happy. I was happy too! They invited me to the buffet line! As soon as break was over, immediately played a polka with no hesitation, Ballad and then rocked out...a Successful gig...

Many Montreal area reside here in winter. Request many line dance songs that are in French. Have them ready on my iPad to play. But what was popular last year, not this year. A challenge.

Next time, will do more detective work on these gigs and prepare ahead of time. It doesn’t hurt to ask. Make an easier, stress free gig. The worst nightmare is having them come up for requests several times during the event. Then I think you are not reading the audience.

Oh those dang Montrealers get in to everything... lol
I think your idea is the right one. Just talking to some people before the gig and getting a list of a few songs can make all the difference, and that is what gets you called back... if what they ask for is what you can/want to play.

Jerry,
Maybe you can give me some insider information on what is popular social dance tunes in your area? It may help me on my New Years gig here in Florida. Like I said before, it seems every year some new trend of dance style comes out. Always ask for Line dances. But what is the popular trend Today? HELP!

Line dancing is popular with seniors now? Well, I suppose it's good exercise and if they don't do much other dancing any more...
