Ben it took me at least a year to get used to the scandalli keyboard after playing a guerrini classic, it just puts me off getting a different keyboard

The wing is compact so it will have small keys, please do not tell me I am looking for something that does not exist, I am going to keep the scandalli, I just want another lighter. probably cheaper accordion that I can carry easily and play along with the scandalli easily

The Wing has normal size keys; however, its not a cheap option. You may need to go for something with fewer voices & keys if you want a cheap alternative - I have a Hohner Student for that purpose.

Now that,s more my style, one thing I noticed is that the gap between black keys on the excelsior is 13 mm and on the scandalli it is 14 mm, I would be grateful if you could measure it on the hohner.
The width of my fingertips is 15mm and the more I think about it, the more I wonder how I ever play anything

I was discussing this with a friend who had a specially made vignoni with no bass section, he measured the keyboard and found the length of 2 octaves was about 1/2 " less than on a standard vignoni, he said they had never told him about this

A well known accordion shop has told me that keyboards are all sorts of lengths, even on so called standard 120 bass models

I had this black key gap issue with a compact. They make the gap narrower between the 3 blacks group than the 2 (c# d#). I'd often catch the black keys after playing a standard instrument & was bemoaning this with my coach.... who said playing between the blacks isn't good practice.

Too late for me...!

It's about 15mm on my Hohner Student IV.

The difference in button size and spacing on button boxes is probably greater than the variation in width etc of piano keys. I have at least 4 different sizes and spacings on different boxes and moving from one to t'other is just something you get used to

Thankyou for your excellent photo the distance I was measuring is 10 .0 to 11.3 on your keyboaed =13mm

I think youd need an external caliper to meaure that accurately - ie at the base of the black keys. However Colin on the one youve chosen, you are looking at an angle that distorts the measurement. Better look at the next one along 12.4, head on pic:

12.4 to 13.8 (maybe 13.9) = 14mm min + 1mm space between the white and black keys each side= 16 to17mm :tup:

On my STUDIOSA II there are 6 spaces between black keys,
1 is just under 17 mm
1 is just over 16 mm
4 are very close to 16.5 mm
shadows on the photos may lead into errors

The white keys are 20mm, gaps between black keys 14-16mm (both on the Student and the Wing)

Well, it seems my accordion is the odd one out with a black key width gap of about 13mm , and it also seems that the general opinion is that you can swap accordions quite easily once you get used to them, so there you are Stevie, onwards and upwards. ( by the way it was the ruler that was funded by the national lottery, not the accordion)

Well I have taken no.te of your comments and bought a new pigini 3 voice 72 bass, strangely there was also a second hand one available but the keys were smaller.

The marinucci with the growling reeds went back for repair 3 times but was never
cured, again I took advice from this forum and complained to John who did not hesitate to offer to reverse the deal or let me choose another instrument, so far I am happy with the Pigini just the usual small bellows problem, and insufficient adjustment on the bass strap, the weight is about 7 kg compared to 12 for the scandalli and 10 for the marinnuci so I amgoing to try playing standing up

Which tuning did you choose? MMM or LMM or other?

If the 80 bss you are looking at is a 2 voice it would be light, though there are not many around but they do exist. Weltmeister do a 60 bass Rubin with narrow keys which is smaller than most 60 and very light. Second hand ones dont come up all that often.
