This big black snake rudely tried this morning to steal one of my chicken eggs in a nest box. I made him give it back.
Yesterday there were two snakes but I didn’t get there in time to catch them.

For those who don’t like snakes, these are very strong but otherwise harmless. It would be annoying snd painful if it wrapped around your neck and squeezed hard. It’s even painful if they coil around your hand or arm.

This one was about 5’ long. The biggest I’ve grabbed was almost 7’ long and 10’ up a tree.

Twice I’ve found them in a peacock breeding house. It scared the hens off the nests and killed maybe $500 worth of eggs by letting them get too cold. Thing was, peacock eggs are far bigger than chicken eggs and there was NO way it could have swallowed one.

5' long? I'd be going nowhere near that!

I learned as a kid that snakes can’t possibly hurt you if you hold them firmly by the neck. I’d catch them with a stick with a short limb at the bottom sticking out 90-degs from the main stick. I’d take them home and keep them in a cage for a while before letting them go. My mother might not have been thrilled but she was always encouraging of any interest that might have some educational value.

When we moved to this place the word somehow got out that I was the one to call to extract a snake from a house, shed, or a yard. For some strange reason it seemed that some people don’t even like snakes!!
