Apparently this has been out since March. Im just now finding out about it. :dodgy:

Hal Leonard now publishes an English translation of the Gallianos Méthode Complète dAccordéon:

https://www.halleonard.com/product/282958/complete-accordion-method

Street price is under fifteen bucks. Much better than the small fortune I had to pay to get the original French edition!

Now Im considering whether to keep teaching out of Palmer-Hughes and maybe switch to this? Theres a lot to recommend it over PH, such as:

  • Not written with the assumption that youre starting on a 12-bass. Brings in counter-basses right off the bat, and minor chords are taught one page after major chords.
  • More modern LH fingering in general (4-3 for the basic pattern, uses the pinkie in major scales, etc.), which I prefer.
  • Works for either PAs or CBAs (fingerings given for both).
  • LH chords are introduced along with an explanation of the notes/intervals that make them up.
  • Metronome markings!
  • Bellows change markings!
It also starts the LH off with melodies initially, more like how youd learn piano. LH chords arent introduced until the second chapter. Not sure if thats a plus, a minus, or a neutral.

Downsides compared to PH:

  • Not as progressive/gradual in the introduction of different RH rhythms played on top of LH patterns. I think the PH books do this about as well as it could ever be done.
  • Overall, I dont find the tunes to be as fun to play. Many of them sounds like exercises and few are familiar. PH mostly uses actual songs, many of which a student has probably heard before (corny though many of them may be).
Hmmm... Maybe Ill make my students use both? Pick the best from each?

Thank you for posting this info.
At last an English translated tutorial for both PA and CBA.
Can you compare this tutor with the Helmi Herrington tutor?

Well, I’m not an accordion teacher but a learner however, after being with my teacher for several years now, I think that strict reliance exclusively on any one method is not the best way. My instructor uses PH but deviates from it significantly with his own added material. For example, during PH B bhe introduced me to

I have the Harrington CBA Fast Course, aimed at PA players switching to CBA. There may be another book or beginners. Differences with Galliano?
-originally in English
-specifically for chromatic button accordion (c system) but she has others for PA
-self published from US, may not ship internationally
-because of intended audience, does not spend much time on left hand
-more explanation so may be easier to use without a teacher
-introduces row 4 and 5 right away
-later chapters are focused on particular skills and can be tackled in any order
-practice pieces tend towards childrens songs and polkas, while Galliano incorporate more french, italian and latin american styles

I play accordion mostly by ear never been able to stick with a method book

Is this Harrington CBA fast course a gap in the market?
Isn't that what many USA and UK based PA accordion players have been waiting for? A selfstudy course in English, aimed at PA players who want to switch to CBA.

Actually, I think that if you took the best from each, that this would definitely be better than all of just one or the other.  You would know each of your students and be able to decide which parts they are weak in and what book best addresses that weakness.
