Reading these forums has made me thinking back to when I started to learn the accordion, which got me to thinking what was the first tune I learned to play.

If I remember correctly I think it was a slimmed down version of the cuckoo Waltz

Most recent thanks to these forums was Sarah's Song

What is everyone else first and most recent?

its quite difficult to think of the first tune(s) played but the 1st serious tune was la paloma and most recent chariot(aka i will follow him)

Thanks to "Accordion for Absolute beginners" (Tweed / Mallinson), my first tune was 'Skip to My Lou'. My first tune in front of an audience will be 'See Amid the Winter Snow' at a Scout fundraising event a week on Saturday. Wish me luck!
As well as practicing this, I'm currently trying to get the hang of 'White Horses' (theme tune of 70's TV series)

The first tune I can remember learning, although cant remember what it was method book it was in (maybe it was just a sheet)... was Two lovely black eyes - Ive since been told, its a song set to the tune of Come To The Sea - I suspect its deemed non PC now
It wasnt this long ago for me... footage from1932 - dont you love youtube...

My first tune other than practice pieces was La Golondrina , still a favorite. My current effort is the Anniversary Waltz, Russian I think.

First was probaby the first tune in palmer hughes book one. Merrily we play along or some such.

Most recent that I can play is 12th street rag and the most recent that I am working on is Jalousie tango.

<FONT font=Garamond><SIZE size=125>Its been too long to remember the first. My most recent - and I am not at all done yet - is Dizzy Fingers. I hope to nail it soon. Gotta do that practice thing...

First tune I could play both hands together was 'The Chimney Corner' - took me ages to get to grips with it. Currently have quite a few on the go but notably 'Las Fallas,' 'Chevaux du Bois' and 'Valse de la Poupee' the latter is a particular pain.

I started learning from an old booklet that I'd found in a charity shop - The Wright Way to Learn the Accordion, 1947. Looking through it now, the first tune I learned all the way through was probably 'Blue Bells of Scotland', in C.... which might explain why I still foul that one up when we (very occasionally) do it for Morris, in G!

Most recent - we've just added a few new tunes to our French dance repertoire, e.g. La Lanternaire (mazurka), Bourree de Crottefou, Bourree Chapdes Beaufort, La Laguiolaise (waltz).
For my own entertainment, I'm currently working on 'Horizonto' by Paul James/Blowzabella, both on accordion and flute (but not at the same time).

...dont you love youtube... Yep, when it works!

Link fixed. Billy Reids London Accordion Band 1932 featuring some early Dallapes..

First tune was Ode to Joy! Now learning my second tune- oh Danny Boy in G. Amazing Grace next on the list. Still very much a beginner is my excuse!

Jalousie tango, a good idea and Stradella friendly. I'm still working on Christmas music but if anyone wants to set up a topic on this, I'm in. :)

I was learning 'Jalousie' for a while too but it's been on the back burner in a different kitchen for while now. Must get back to it. What is your source? I'm using a Frank Marocco arrangement.

First thing I tried to play was 'Daisy, Daisy" (in F) as it was easy do by ear and I had no instruction or music books to hand (I also play piano and formerly saxophone). Once I got hold of some interesting arrangements of French and Scottish stuff and jazz, I got better quickly as they were all things that I wanted to play.

The last thing I learned properly was probably "Watermelon Man" (Herbie Hancock, arrangement by Hans-Guenther Koelz).

My arrangement is by Roberto Carreno out of the 1920s. I would be interested in seeing the Marocco arrangement, is it in one of his books?

I think since there are a couple of us working on this I will start a thread in the Tune of the month. With the stipulation that it will take me much longer than a month to get any good at it. (I have been at it for around 3 weeks and am just starting to hear the melody)

I've been playing it for years in bands, not on accordion, but have bits of it from various different arrangements in my head. Plus a version from a "101 Latin Hits for Buskers" book, which has the right hand voicings expressed as chord symbols, so they may need a little pruning.

I have that version of watermelon man. It's a book full of great arrangements but I will admit that they are just outside my skill range but I'm closing fast with those fiddly jazz chords.

Dennis Murphys Polka was the first real composition I learned. Although I think I have to re-learn it as I learned it without a teacher and only 6 months into learning the accordion so Ive most definitely learned it 'incorrectly', if you get me. That's to say Im using bad fingerings for both sides and have a bad sense of rhythm playing the song etc.
