Are there anyone out there who know a bit about the Borsini lineup? I got what I think is a good offer on one used, but I could do with a little input. It is a 4/5 c-system 4' - 2x8' - 16' with 928 branded in the wood behind the cover. I recon 12-15 years old, but could be both more or less. It sounds and plays very nice but could use a little tuning. Everything looks sound.
Any thoughts?

Borsini, great maker. But I know nothing about button accordion reputation other than Hohner Shand Morino. Some of the others may enlighten you further but I think they're bound to ask which model it is; or a pic?

Thank you! That is a very helpful site. I still can't quite pinpoint the exact accordion, I have en front of me though.

That looks like a great instrument Norland. I bought a new Borsini K11 a couple of years ago, and although the tuning is to my taste and its a pleasure to play, I do have doubts about its build quality compared with older instruments. As you have the benefit of 'try before you buy' that shouldn't be a problem.

Please let us know how you get on with it and whether or not you buy it.

Pete

Pete,

Thanks for sharing! Do you mean compared to older Borsinis? I had the impression that they had improved since the 70 and are now en par with many of the other italian hand builds.
Yes it's quite a privileged situation.
What I'm wondering is if the reeds are of adequate quality and such. Structurally it feels great to my untrained hands. All buttons play very smoothly. Everything is snug and tight. It'll need a bit of tuning, though it's not too bad. But at that price point it all seems fair.
I'm going to take it to an old friend who played for half a century. He'll probably give me some good input too.
My only luxury problems are if I can learn to play it good enoug to dare live performance (being a piano system player) and if I am physically able to fill more instruments into my small house.

I'm with Dunlustin, bite his hand off.

When I mentioned build quality, I was referring to the casing more than anything. The playing side of the accordion is fine, but for example, the feet are made of cheap plastic, and although I am very careful when handling instruments, one of them has already bent due to being placed on the floor.

Incidentally, there is another thread running about converting to CBA for us piano players, me being one of them.

I can see what you mean, Pete.
It looks like one of the feet has been broken and fixed with glue on "mine". That doesn't bother me a bit. The rest seems fine. This seems quite unanimous. I am warming to the idea by the hour...

'Bite his hand off..'? Do the others know the price? Have I missed it somewhere?

Yeah. I got cold feet and deleted it. No secret though. He's asking 4500dkk a little more than £500. It seems like a bargain. Just tried the pick up though. It was next to useless. Very sharp and boxy. And the Jack socket is bored straight through to the inside of the beast so when I remove the dummy socket it beads bad air. Is that normal?

There are some very poor quality internal mics around on accordions, especially some of the older ones, and you don't want to take it out leaving a big hole, but if you need the amplification and you do go for this box, I would look on the cost of a better mic as part of the cost of the instrument. There are good internal mics and external contact mics available (and I like air mics but that's a different story).

4 voice (?) good make, in good condition... bite his hand off. A black blank over that jack & you'd not notice it at all.

Yes, LMMH 26(!) selectors and five bass voices. It sounds like it's a no brainer from what you say. I'm still interested in the age of the box.

Don't know for sure, but - based on switches, grill & lettering style: 1990s at the oldest.

Thank you very much, Soulsaver! I recon somewhere between 1990 and 2005 would be probable too.
Everyone have encouraged me to buy it. Except the local dealer I just called to ask if they could help with the tuning. He was adament that anything in classifieds ads was a scam and not worth spending any energy on whatsoever and was very quick to end the conversation. I recon he'd much rather sell me the one he has for sale from the same era at four times the price

Maybe he wanted to end the call so he could get behind his computer and buy it himself.

That might be true!

That wouldn't work though, 'cause I just bought it {} :ch

Well done, Norland. 'Health to wear' as they say in Ireland... tho' usually about new clothes
