Do you have an opportunity to play Oktoberfest music this year?  The one festival where the accordion is required!  My club is playing a parade but I will be out of town.  I've got limited time at the Alzheimer's support group tomorrow so I'm planning Apples Peaches, Muss I Denn, Beer Barrel, In Heaven There is No Beer and Trink Bruderlein Trink along with our usual set.  You?

regardless which month it is, I always open with a bayerische landler

and then proceed to play regular music, to everyone's dissappointement

Im afraid the male public is not attending the festival for the accordions or the Steirisch Harmonikas at the local version of the Oktoberfest in my country... Theyre going for the meat festival, the Fleisch, the beer and the women...

Oktoberfest à la Flamande  ;)

There will be piano accordions, not sure if they will bring in the real stuff, the Steirisch Harmonikas, for this edition...

Its about 15 kilometers from where I live in my country, but Im not sure me and my friends will attend the festival in Wieze Belgium.
Last year they revived this legendary Flemish version of the Wieze Oktoberfeesten.

This edition is on 18th and 19th of october 2019, probably already sold out.
Jean-Mary Pfaff has already confirmed his presence for this 2019 edition.

An impression of last years event, with guest star Jean-Marie Pfaff, former Bayern Munich goalkeeper, and some burlesque, the beer cans, the accordions:

Wieze Oktoberfeesten 2018

The bill with the stars attending the 2019 Wieze Oktoberfeesten:
https://tellmemore.media/legendarische-wieze-oktoberfeesten-maakt-affiche-bekend-voor-2019/

Attention: it is my duty to inform you I dont immediately see the burlesque acts listed on the affiche or bill for this 2019 edition , but they could be listed under surprise acts... Being somehow familiar with the cultural traditions of the Wieze Oktoberfeesten, it will be hard not to be confronted with some dancing Fleisch on the tables, and chances are the Dirndl Mädel and Burlesque striptease will be present.

Dont forget your Lederhosen, or leather Schnellfickhose as the Austrians and Bavarians call them  ;)
(as you know, the real historic traditional Lederhose did not have a zipper, as the farmers working in the fields could open them quickly with the drop-front flap)

Wow, crazy!!! Even Rosamunda in German....

I am 1/4 Bavarian, 3/4 Czech, mom is half and my grandmother was right from the heart of the Black Forest... It's ALWAYS Octoberfest in our home... lol

P.S. Rosamunde = Skoda Lasky and is originally of Czech origin.  ;)
P.P.S. I suck at yodeling... lol

Thanks Jerry! Yup, and I wish I could sing the Czech. They also call it Rosamunda in Italy but today I will sing it as Roll Out the Barrel..without yodeling!

Hi Tom, the Rosamunda was in Dutch in the video but I’m dead sure there’s a German version as well. After a few beers [emoji481] you wouldn’t tell the difference in any case.
Nice to see a Roland PA on stage.

Hey, here is a thought, we should start a new thread and get all people who want to participate to put up an audio or video file with their favorite Octoberfest song. Leiderhosen optional... lol

Who would be game to try this out?

Yea, I am not that good at the Dutch vs. German, I admit it.

Ok, Jerry, Im in! Dont remember when I recorded this and I obviously have the wrong hat on:

bravo Tom

stick a feather on that cap and your good to go

after 7 beers no one will notice

Thanks Jozz! I was out of town so didn't play at the Oktoberfest parade with my accordion club, but did 2 venues and probably will roll out the barrel again on Thursday. Then it's time to get the old Christmas music back on the stand!

Makes me want to get up and polka, great job Tom!
Love the sound and look of your accordion too! :)

Who is next? :D

Thanks Jerry! Gotta love the big Piatanesi. Wow, that was two years ago, I sure play it different now.....

A German classic tune that works fine with beer and women:
Das ist die Liebe der Matrosen , about the sailors and their one night stands in every harbor.

Shanty choir Lohnde version with 3 accordions:

A Fred Astaire version with Peter Alexander and some dancers:

A medley including a solo version of Das ist die Liebe der Matrosen:

This poem suits fine the high spirits of an Oktoberfest evening.
Ill better not give an English translation for this poetic verse:

Songtext:

I was kind of hoping to entice a few more people to record a new audio or video of perhaps their favorite Oktoberfest songs.. no takers? :D :D

We don't do Octoberfest in the UK so I doubt if you will get any takers from this side of the pond.
I've always liked polkas as they always seem so jolly so I've been looking to get a few of the most popular ones, but there are literally thousands of them to chose from and it's difficult to see the wood for the trees.  :s
I wonder if someone could kindly give a list of the top ten most popular ones as a starting point.
Thanks in advance.

Hey Pipe,

I don't know which are the "most popular," although I've seen those lists on the internet. I can tell you what we play around here though, which might help.

Beer Barrel Polka (Also known as Roll Out the Barrel, Rosamunda, Skoda Lasky). I think this is the king of the polkas these days, at least in the English speaking world. If you only play one polka, play the Beer Barrel!

Other popular polkas here include:

Apples, Peaches Pumpkin Pie (super easy)
Wooden Heart (Muss I Denn)
Clarinet Polka
Prague (Praha) Polka
Pennsylvania Polka
Tinker Polka
Blue Gill Polka
Golden Star Polka
Accordion Man Polka
Barbara Polka
Jenny Lind Polka

That's about 10 random polkas. Good luck, let us know what you play!

A million seller for Frankie Yankovic was "Just Because" Polka.  It was a "Cleveland Style" Polka

John M.

P.S. Not a polka, but another million seller for Frankie was "Blue Skirt Waltz"

Hi Tom/ John M,
thanks for the suggestions. I've always thought (here in the UK) that "Roll out the Barrel"  is a bit "naff". The sort of thing you saw in old movies of cockney characters in an east end pub round the Old Joanna. Can't say I've ever heard it played anywhere else over here. Probably the same goes for "Wooden Heart"
I've got the sheet music for clarinet polka and apples peaches and pumpkin pie polka so far so I'll have a go at them and look for the other ones on the list.       Happy days  :)

Good luck! It's true, Beer Barrel can definitely be considered "cheesey." Guess we have that sometimes with everything accordion though.

Thanks John, we play boh of those too. I've got a giant pile of Yankovic polkas and waltzes I'd like to get to someday. So many tunes, so little time....
