I have been Anyanka on all forums for a long long time now, simply because I like the name. I'm not particularly paranoid about my "real" identity - I'm easily findable via my website (see link below) - but the whole point of the internet is that you can re-invent yourself...

It's something that gets on my nerves on ebay - you buy something and whilst you details are divulged (obviuosly) to the seller, theirs isn't. So if you have an issue and want to return an item you HAVE to ask them for their address. If I'm sending money (PayPal) for something I want their address first. - PayPal doesn't show it either.

Ones own name is only a handle to identify. You could be born and given any other handle (name). On forums you can choose your own which is sometimes better than the one your parants gave you.
