Hi,

I was recently bought an old Rigoletto Accordion from an auction house to learn so I can play it in a ceilidh band. Some of the sound holes don't have a netting/grate over them, but apart from that, tuning doesn't seem to be a problem and none of the material on the bellows is ripped. However, most of the time, it makes a very strange droning sound underneath the notes (I only usually play the right-hand/piano notes). There is an accordion repair shop nearby, but I'd be quite interested to know what it is and roughly how serious the problem is.

I don't know how much information is needed to suggest an answer but please do ask if you need more of it :)
Thanks so much in advance!

Try operating the bellows with no keys pressed. If you still hear the drone a bass or treble pallet is leaking (open) so when the bellows are operated that note sounds continuously. If so, try each key/ button individually in turn until you find the key that matches the drone. It'll be the pallet attached to that key... but it may be more than one.
