New to The Accordionists Forum. My story is familiar to others on here. I had a 12 bass when I was 7-8 years old (the Lawrence Welk era). I took lessons up until I was half-way through PH book 2. I could go no further as my family could not afford a 120 bass accordion. I am now retired and taking up the instrument again. I purchased a used 3/4 sized accordion with 120 bass from a gentleman, who plays semi-professional. I ordered PH books 1 & 2, Sedlon 1a & 1b, and The Mighty Accordion book 1. I am teaching myself. I practice in my sewing room when my husband takes his afternoon nap. :) I am learning so much from these conversations. I also belong to a few accordion groups on FB.

Welcome "Newbie" and congratulations for your decision to re-activate your accordion.
I don't have something like a sewing room but sometimes operate a Pfaff 332 automatic which I inherited from my grandma.
Fortunately my wife (and neighbours) tolerate when I'm rehearsing with my accordions 😌

Greetings and merry Christmas from Bavaria to KS

Welcome! Just a word of warning: you have picked a user name that is not likely to age well. At some point of time in the future your avatar is going to be labeled as "Newbie, been here for ages!". At least I hope it will be.

well.. since you're from Kansas..

if you get some of those old style accordion naming chrome letters and
re-badge your Accordion "TOTO"

then you could use it for your handle here too

lot's of those old Student accordions were named..
we have a Doris around here somewhere..
and a Katie too

ciao !

I know of what you speak.
Some years ago and on another forum, having just bought my final (diatonic) accordion I knew I would never be tempted to buy another 'box.'
My 'handle:' 'Dunlustin' because that was what I had done at last.
Since then I have ditched the diatonic accordion - I'm quite a lot poorer but do have more accordions. So the 'lust' remains if, mostly, tamed.

Thank you for the welcome. I spent some time in Wurzburg working at the Army hospital there. I also worked at the Army hospitals at Landsthul and Heidelberg. I truly enjoyed my time spent in Germany. I am a retired nurse. My "sewing room" is a spare bedroom that I took over and my practicing area has just enough room for me, my music stand and chair ;)

I hope to change my username in the future!

Newbie - My apologies for not saying 'Welcome.'
Also my comment was not meant to be a 'dig' - I'd been looking for an excuse to explain my silly Username

I tried to use several other usernames and I kept getting this name already taken message. Out of desperation I typed in Newbie and behold, that name worked!

Well I, for one, like it and think you should keep it. It serves as a reminder to maintain that "beginner's mindset" no matter how much experience you get, and to keep yourself in a perpetual state of "newbieness" by always seeking out and appreciating new challenges.

Welcome to the forum!

P.S. The wife and I made a quick visit to Topeka earlier this year on a lark and enjoyed it quite a bit. The Brown v. Board of Education site was really well-done. We even did the climb up to the top of the Capital Dome. My legs hurt thinking about it. :-)

My welcome too!

I look forward to reading about your journey - not long ago I acquired and started started learning the accordion, from scratch. I have long piano and other instrument experience but the term "newbie" describes me perfectly with the PA!! I wish I had the introduction at 7-8 years old; the stradella bass is eating my lunch. (or it least it was until a recent shoulder surgery put it all on hold!)

I wish I had a sewing room to practice in.

BTW, I may be the only 73-year-old guy on my street with a sewing machine! I work in wood, metals plastic, and other materials but suddenly realized one day I was unable to make and repair things from fabric - so I bought a sewing machine. Actually got an embroidery machine which is fantastic, especially when visiting kids want to learn to make something!

No skill an accordionist cannot use! My self-made microphone bar for use with the ensemble's bass accordion attaches to the front grille by button-hole elastics attaching to the grille screws. That doesn't require a whole lot of sewing, but at least you need to be able to put down a seam.
