The Accordion Forum...

Sandy Flett has confirmed Over on melodeon.net that The Accordion Forum has closed down.

I would just like to thank Al, Sandy and Bill for running a forum that I got a lot out of over its lifespan. It built up a lot of enthusiasm quickly and filled a gap for a lot of people. It must have been a massive effort - thank you to them.

It's a small world we're in. My suggestion is that the best thing for how this new forum looks to newcomers might be to keep speculation and comments on the end of that other forum offline; all kinds of things happened over the past couple of weeks. A very big thank you to those who set up this excellent new forum and I hope we can make it as good, friendly, respectful, diverse and wide-ranging as possible. I'm sure we can.

Wow, that's a real shame - it was an amazing resource, even with the refocusing.

Oh that is a pity. As Mat said, the accordion world is quite small and we need to support each other best we can. Good luck to Al who worked hard on the other forum. Thanks for the support and opportunity.

WOW, that`s a shock - I know they removed some forums because they wanted to focus on Traditional music from the British isles and Knobby made this place for those of us who aren`t centered on that genre in our accordion playing (I play that stuff on Melodeons of course) but I didn`t expect Al would close it down

I think that most of us who used the Forum could see that things were going wrong, it would have been a courtesy though, for a brief closing statement.
I hope that we’ll learn from the experience, and not let this forum go the same way...

that's a shock and a shame.

i was wondering how many members would be left ?

and guessed not many but then i noticed there was new members joining all the time so they may have filled the void over time

It would have been nice to have had more time to migrate over some of the very useful info that was available on there. I'm sorry now I put off copying over more of the repair stuff - but glad I brought some of the most viewed stuff over.
Shame.

It would. You made a great start though, Soulsaver, so thanks for that :)

I can't help feeling that I was sorely misguided in thinking that I was a member of a community.
A forum may be started by an individual but surely the continued existence of its accumulated experience should not be at the mercy of an individual member; however central that member is.
How can a forum be structured so as to be protected from a unilateral decision? All that stuff apparently just lost! Surely it could have been archived/linked as happened to the contents of other redundant sites.
Many people referred to the effort/finance put into the forum by an individual. Coincidentally, I was thinking about "Accordionists" this morning and wondering how much it was costing a few enthusiasts. I wasn't thinking about the forum's vulnerability but rather that I was freeloading my interests on someone else's finance. I've no idea how much these things cost but would be happy to make a contribution. Some other forums do have a commercial side effect but that's not the case here - one more reason to support "Accordionists" financially.

I can sign up to that idea.

Al infered time was at a premium even before things muddied so that could have been the main problem and the random anti folk type messages probably just helped him to make up his mind to call 'time' sooner rather than later but a 'goodbye' would be nice or maybe a 'hello' even

my thoughts were someone may set up a forum and not necessarily want it to be big but specialist but i suppose inferences are that the community takes over after a point - so managing specialist type forums are probably difficult to manage and one could be a victim of success

i blame that alien  , things were fine before he came to visit

You actually are right, because it was that light heartedness brought out factions ,like me  who are not totally immersed in Trad Folk but dip a toe now and then............and like perhaps non-trad Folk ....I like Folk Rock like Steel Eye Span, the mistake I made was saying so,without any intent of upsetting carts bearing cider producing fruit......anyway that's me finished on that particular subject.....Hows the Pigliacampo suiting you ? Sounds like "very well" could be a possible answer.. :D

well is the answer but its not quite a replacement for my concerto which was my ideal so now it will become a sunday accordion til i decide (and another added to the collection but really need to trim down which is difficult as each box tends to have its own merits) - my friend/coach loves it and he is italian and played all his life so thats good..

i am a bit fussy :ugeek:

I know how you feel but Id advise take some time to become accustomed to its virtues - they arent always immediately apparent IMO. For example, I find some things that require accurate and fast bass playing is nigh on impossible on a some German accordions.

like this theory althoooooough for me this skill may be a couple of hundred years away and not a priority for a while

Naaah youll be surprised.

I was only a member of the forum for two weeks, but I got an enormous amount of help and guidance on my journey back to playing the accordion. Not to mention the great contacts I have made.

One of the moderators told me that after Al announced that the forum was pulling back to the original focus of the forum, he continued to get so much flac, that he decided the hassle was just too much and he closed it down. The forum was designed to bring together musicians in that clearly stated genre. Too bad new members couldn't let it be what it was. Al just got too stressed out.

I posed a question on Session.org, which is for Irish folk and trand mentioned the words celtic and Scottish

For some reason my full post didn't go through. To continue... Session.org told me I was in the wrong forum and sent me to theaccordion forum, which was how I got there. My pointg is that it was a clearly defined forum. Which is great if you want to be there. Als problem was that he was too nice a guy to tell people who weren't interested in only Brit and Scot music to go elsewhere in a more definite way than he did.

Let's make sure this forums creed is definitely stated.

Nathen
