You measure the size of the reed you want to replace and see if the reed you want to put in place is about the same size. Take it off clean it and wax it on the reedblock you want to put it on.

I tried a reply earlier but it seems to have vanished.
What I would do if the reed plate is shorter than the hole in the reed plate you should first glue in a small piece of wood near the end (furthest from the base of the reed block. A piece cut from a match would do. Then you can put the reed plate on and fix with wax.
The transfer of the vibrations isn't the biggest issue (it's a minor part of the sound and the transfer through the base and sides of the reed plate will be enough) but when you try to fill a gap with wax you risk ending up with a rather big blob of wax inside the reed block.
If the reed plate isn't too short but is too narrow, I wouldn't try to use it.
