When did the convention for register switches phase in? That is, when did manufacturers go from the "imitation instrument" labeling [Violin, bassoon, piccolo, musette, etc.] to the "lines with dots" configuration? Was the change rapid or did it happen over many years, even decades? Knowing this would be useful for dating accordions.

Thanks,
Waldo

It happened over decades, so it's not all that useful for dating accordions.
The one thing that is more recent is the tendency to use *meaningful* lines with dots. Just like the "imitation instrument" labeling was meaningless, manufacturers often also used dots that were meaningless, for instance suggesting that an accordion has piccolo reeds (dot high up) when it does not. I have a Crucianelli Super Video here that has markings that suggest it is LMMH, but it really is LMM, and it has both dots and meaningless names written on the register switches.

When I was a kid I had a Video LMH. The register buttons were chromed with no markings, but there were seven of them, and with a little experimentation I could figure out what they were.
