I now have a Behringer Xenyx 302 USB mixer with a mic plugged in to the MIC IN. The mixer is detecting the mic but I can't get my PC to record. I have downloaded Tracktion 4 software which was initially recognising that the mixer was connected but is now giving an error message "device did not initialise correctly". Any ideas?

a) Disconnect / Reconnect usb cable between Computer Behringer with Computer on . See if computer accepts the device.

b) Start / Stop Computer with device attached.

What operating system are you using.......?

Try their support page ...don't panic , computers are notoriously sniffy about new hardware / software ...it'll be a simple fix.

I'm using XP (I know, I know, but to an old DOS user it seems modern). I've tried disconnecting the usb cable and the PC recognises a new device sometimes but not always. I'll try a restart with the mixer attached.

I hate to say this but XP may have some serious problems recognising USB devices.
Does their support site mention XP as a possible OS?

After a restart the PC seems to be recognising the mixer. I've tweaked the PC audio settings to include the mixer. I think the problem may be that I can't figure out how to assign a recording device to a track in Tracktion. The manual diagram looks different to what I have on-screen.

After a bit more investigation I suspect that XP is not up to the job.

Don't give up yet.
Does the mixer come with test software?
If so, fire it up and see if you can at least reccord something.
When thit works I would then try some free software such as Audacity.
If these all work then it's probably down to you not assigning sources to tracks properly.

I've downloaded Music Editor Free and can now record with the mic in the microphone socket of the headset input. No response with the mic in the MIC IN socket.

If you put a mic into the MIC IN socket , put some headphones into the Behringer headphone socket and listen to see if you can hear the MIC ......There may be a problem with the MIC IN socket and not your PC software ...could be a hardware problem.

What sort of mic are you using ? Has it got an on/off switch (I know ,but basics are silly aren't they)

Is it a condenser mic that may require a battery ?

Is the mic the one that works in the headphone mic socket ?

In which case I would suggest that you try another instrument or mic in the MIC IN socket even if it's just a lead just see if there is anything coming through that socket.....

If not box it back and ask Amazon for another ...it's faulty.

If this link works it will take you to my first recording attempt - funny how putting a mic near the box affects your playing confidence!

Very nice oldchemist, but I didn't detect any lack of confidence. Lets hear some more.

Great job on the recording. Nicely played.

I to am always surprised by how much worse I seem to play when I am recording myself. There is something about the process that causes me to second guess everything that I am doing and I end up making more mistakes. (and then groaning and grousing about the mistakes when I go back and listen to it)

That's a nice sound from your accordion.
Looks like it's working fine.
