Questions about old fingering notation

I am teaching myself CBA (C system).  I am at a fairly beginning level.  I found an old book of easy sheet music called "J'apprends l'Accordion: Collection spéciale pour Débutants", by Ch Demaele (a Belgian accordionist).  

I am confused by some of the notation of the Marilou song (see attached):

1.  For the left hand, the "International Bass" fingering is written below the bass clef.  The fingerings are numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4, which doesn't make sense to me ('1' would be the thumb, which we don't use in the left hand, I think).  Do you think these really mean 2,3,4 and 5 in our current notation?

2.  For the right hand, the CBA fingering is written above the treble clef.  Some of the numbers are written in little squares (e.g, 4th measure of line 3).  What does that mean?  I thought it might mean to use the 4th and 5th rows of the CBA, but that doesn't make sense here.

3.  In general, do you think I should trust the fingering suggestions?  They seem different than my Maugain book.  Are there such things are "old-fashioned" and "modern" fingerings?

3. Some printed fingering are wonderful. Others, not so. There are no rules. You have to see what works best for you.

I have just had a quick look at this post.
I am not sure about your figuring.
Perhaps you should have a look at the figuring patterns suggested by for eg Lars Holm.

So if I understand it correctly the thumb is not used either left or right.
And the fingering does not seem to make much sense for C-system so my guess is it is intended for B-system.
Generally my advice is to ignore fingering and search for what works best for you. Everyone uses different fingering on CBA (whereas many people use the same fingering on PA).
