Can anyone recommend any of the above. My straps fasten at the back and I can't reach them ( comfortably! )

I’m having trouble understanding what you mean. My accordion straps only fasten when they are first put on the accordion or adjusted for length. After that, they just go around my shoulders without any additional fastening. Are you, perhaps, referring to a back strap?  Most of those fasten on the side.

Assuming youre talking about a backstrap. Its a good question. Connecting my backstrap is a tricky thing, and I can reach it pretty well. Its just clumsy.

I havent seen anything for most accordions, but the new childrens Hohner XS (extra small) released this year has very interesting straps.

You get to put them on like a vest and buckle them in front. Then attach the instrument. Lots of innovation in this little box. This instrument is for kids, but there are adult straps for instructors I think. Theyd only work for this instrument though. Id like to see an after-market using this design to fit other accordions.

This video shows a kid strapping it on:

[Hey, could we insert videos in the old forum? Just saw the little film strip icon above there. Cool!]

The little Hohner was first mentioned on the forum earlier: https://www.accordionists.info/showthread.php?tid=6079

Hi Tony,
Sorry for the confusion. Yes, I am talking about a back strap which is an "extra" strap to "standard" fastening straps.
I have seen a back strap that is extra long and so instead of the buckle finishing up behing you it finishes up in front which makes it easier to fasten.
I have seen it on a "I did that" post ( JerryPH I think ) but can't find it now.

I like the backstraps from accordionbackstrap.com. You attach them to your regular straps and then there is an adjustable side so it is easy to fasten and tighten. I got one because, like many, the one that came with my accordion is too difficult to attach by myself. The new one really saves my back. I got the wide one but I think the regular size would have been just as good.

I have two of Elena's blackstraps from AccordionBackstrap.com They are great, but attach at the back, so wouldn't solve the problem for users who need an alternative.

Thanks Bruce. Yes, but people may not know that there are straps that can be attached easily in the back, without a fancy system or attaching in the front.

Elena’s backstraps are great, but she made me several pair that work even better. She made them both equal length so that you can more easily grab and fasten the clasp. I offered before but if anyone wants the original ones, un-used, I’m happy to send them.

Good point, Eddy. I agree, having the one (shorter) side longer would allow the backstraps to be attached higher up on the accordion straps. Also, another material, say cotton belt webbing, would make the backstraps less likely to slip down the strap. Anyway, they are great.

Hi Phil,

After reading many of the comments above, I am beginning to think I am missing out on something. My Arietta has a back-strap, but I have never used it. In fact, I really should take it off, as it gets in my way just dangling down.

My initial reading of your original post left me a little confused, as my mind wandered to other things which fasten either at the front or the back. It is now a distant memory, but I didn't have a particular preference back then.

The Arietta's back strap fastens at the back but, if ever I decided to use it, my ape-like arms would serve me well.

Kind Regards,

Stephen.

it's nice if you don't need one!

if you play with really beefy leather straps that stay in shape of their own I find it less necessary

but I play with cloth straps always and if I'm sitting down my left strap will slide of if I don't hold it in place with the backstrap

standing up the backstrap helps to spread the load more evenly across the shoulders / upper back during long sessions

Hi Jozz,

I have honestly never used a back-strap, so see no point in starting now. None of my instruments have ever attempted to escape from me up to now.

It may just be me (and probably is) but I don't like the idea of a back-strap. I think I may feel a little restricted if I was to ever use one.

Kind Regards,

Stephen.

Hi,

Here I have accordion without backstrap, works OK, and another one with backstrap, a Neotech Accordion Harness, and the backstrap is always locked, no need to open it, as the harness has a quick connector/disconnector just on the bottom of the treble side, very easy and quick. Works OK and keeps accordion in place. Of course ymmv ...

Corinto just mentioned Neotech straps and harness, which might be just what wirralaccordion was originally asking for: https://neotechstraps.com/accordion-harness.html

It looks like they have buckles (neo-loops :) ) that let you fasten/unfasten the harness at the bottom of the accordion. They look pretty nice. Thanks Corinto!

I also have the neostraps. The concept is good, but I like the accordionbackstrap better because I can use it with my original, more heavy duty leather straps. The neostraps are a little more awkward to get into and are not as comfortable and supportive with a larger accordion. I like them, however for a smaller, lighter accordion.

i have the Neotech without those detachable loops in the front

so take care which ones you order

I have one of these. I find it comfortable in use and holds the accordion firmly. However I stopped using it because it wont fit in my accordion soft case and also it is a bit inconvenient having to unclip it every time you want to have a break from playing. :-/
