On what do you sit?

Having back trouble with my new accordion. What do you sit on to practice? Chair or stool or do you stand?

A bit of a bum question but for what its worth I find an ordinary dining chair is fine . Its not so much the chair, stool or whatever but the way upon which it is sat that is important in just the same way as ones 'stance' is important if playing stood up.

so the best 'sitth' or should it be 'seatth' is to keep the spine vertical so that only compression load is placed on it i.e. it is under compression not bending tension. This is simply achieved by sitting at ''attention'' i.e. bum as far back as ait will go and back vertical with shoulders square and thrust back. This can be achieved irrespective of personal anatomy as any protuberances are usually at the front! In other words its pretty well the same as when playing standing .

Most aches and pains simply come from playing either drooping or leaning to one side either of which place undue strain on the spine.

Strap adjustment is exactly the same standing or sitting.

George.

I sit either on a wooden dining chair or on an office chair with padding. The important thing for me is that the accordion's weight is on the lap and not on the shoulders. Sometimes I have a piece of wood under my feets to get the knee up higher.

My A........no ,no , no, I will refrain and show a modicum of decorum at this yuletide and seasonal time of the year...........but not for much longer though.

combo of sitting and standing

prefer sitting

main thing is just a strong chair ideally with some good seat padding but with no arm rests

i have always fancied trying the drum throne stool as remember someone raving about it and especially the older drum throne stool ones for some reason - but wouldnt want to spend much money on one :)

re 1)dont take me for an expert or anything but i would have thought a combo of chair type and how you'r sitting is important.
for example i was trying some stools out and found some meant my thighs were floor parallel and some meant they were angled down-i would think parallel is the aim?!

re 2)i'm glad this has been mentioned as this really confuses me - i thought the idea of sitting is pa on lap but if you have back straight pa would be in the same position as standing and suspended , wouldnt it ? :?:or is one saying adjust straps accordingly to sitting or standing position :? :!:

I use a regular dining chair with a cushion added. This suits me.
I think it is important to feel that you have plenty of freedom and that a back rest is not in the way.
Even though I have a backrest I do lot lean back.
Actually I think Ben has the right idea and an adjustable drum stool would be ideal.

As for resting the accordion lightly on your left thigh, I think this is the best position for sitting with the straps adjusted to accommodate.

? an armless arse anchor!

? is it really beyond the wit of man to work out where and how to plonk his arse whilst playing without seeking advice which may not be suitable anyway if given by the owner of a different shape and size of bum and of course probably a different weight and size of box!

george :)

Don't be like that George- I was only arseking!

I prefer being mounted on a throne of thunderbolts, but sometimes I have to come down to the level of mere mortals in which case I use an elephant.

george garsides’ post is spot on; good posture is essential at all times, (not just when playing), so what he advocates makes a lot of sense to me.

I also use an ordinary well padded dining chair with a foot stool to rise by left leg a few inches, which helps to support the weight of my accordion.

In addition, my trusty Pilates Bender Ball keeps my back in proper alignment when placed on my lumbar spine.

A Pilates Bender Ball is very squishy & comfortable (it should not be inflated to its’ maximum), I never play my accordion without it, if you use one you will find that your body is always relaxed, never stressed or tense.
