Just taken delivery of my new accordion, Scandalli Air V, all black edition (for when your music, needs a little mystery).

This was to replace my very much loved Borsini, K11 5 voice double cassotto (which I still have and wouldn’t get rid of).

Looking forward to playing my Scandalli and breaking it in.

Thanks, Tony, The tuning is a classic Italian dry tuning with a touch of wetness for brightness. Yes, it has the Scandalli bass decoupler works like a charm.

Rob,
Congrats! Beautiful box. Tell us about the tuning. Also, does this one have the Scandalli bass decoupler?
Tony
Hi Tony, it’s Scottish musette tuned, I play a variety of music including Scottish so it’s quite a wide tuning. The Air V doesn’t haven’t the bass decoupler, I wish it did, I think that might be only on the air VI. I wanted a 5 voice rather than 4 voice.

Hi Morgan, incorrect on both counts. Not sure how you would have known since it’s not yours!

Some people believe that all accordions of a specific accordion model are made the same, but they are not (and never were). Some mechanical aspects may change over the years without this being communicated to potential buyers, some things depend on customer desires, like what registers to put on chin switches or the palm register (and these choices may influence the position of all registers). And the one thing that is different depending on the customers wishes in all cases is the tuning. Every manufacturer will do tuning to 440Hz or 442Hz depending on what the customer wants (and each manufacturer has their own default which makes playing together a nightmare), and they will give you any tremolo setting you want, from bone dry to very wet.

Yup, the Super VI Extreme and Air VI both have the bass separator, but I think that design makes selecting bass registers too complicated, how many left hand register choices do we really need?

What I do like about the Air V is that you get the best of the double octave registers and the best of the musette registers too and I think the weight and bulk are quite acceptable (around 12.5kg, I believe). I'm guessing the Air V was a custom order as these models don't tend to be available off the shelf? I could be wrong about that though, because I bought a Scandalli Conservatorio BJP442 (V) from the Scandalli showroom shelf, and I would have expected that to be a custom order, but it wasn't.

I'd seriously consider an Air V in the future, though I would go for a less mysterious and more an old-fashioned red marble finish and rich cream keys. Either that or maybe a Manfrini Esperto (LMMM) in the same colourway.

I agree with your point on the left hand registers, also they aren’t marked so it’s a bit of a play around at the start to work out what they are. I’m playing William tell overture at the minute, involving some bass register changes.

It was a custom order for me. I think that’s mainly due to the colour etc. like you, I like the best of the double octave and the best of the musette, and the weight isn’t bad, not much difference from my other accordion.

Rob I’ve to say yours as well, gorgeous. I never played a Scandalli but was always one of my dreams when child. Congratulations

That is very kind of you to say Henrique, I feel the same about Pigini.l, never played one but always dreamt about owning one. So many of the brilliant classical accordionists either have Scandalli, Pigini, or Jupiter. All gorgeous in their own right.
