Marking bass buttons advice.

I was just wondering, how about using one of those cheep glass engraving tools?
You could mark a cross pattern on the intended buttons which is more than enough for tactile orientation whilst playing.
That way you do not etch (or drill) too deeply into the plastic.
My accordion teacher said she used to mark them with a hot needle.
