I bet there arent many of you who would associate the accordion with belly dancing in Istanbul, but here is a clip which will hopefully broaden your horizons.
The lady is Didem Kinali, who sadly wasnt born when I played electric guitar for a short while in the raki bars in Istiklal Cadessi in Pera, Istanbul, in 1975/6. She prefers to dance to accordion music, but is equally at home dancing to drum beat only.
The belly dancers at the time I was there were just a bit rougher round the edges, and were quite often Syrians who were buying their freedom from debt by performing, as an alternative to prostitution in the brothels of nearby Karakoy.
A bass player and myself were paid in kind (in raki, beer, and shashlik kebabs) for accompanying the Turkish bands, which often consisted only of an accordionist, and a drummer.
The bellydancers were distictly off limits to us and were controlled by gangs of men that were better left to their own devices.
If we had any spare cash, the irresistable effects the belly dancers had on us could be offset to a degree by visiting Karakoy (but dont tell anybody I told you!)
The accordion solo starts about 2.28, just before I left for Karakoy!
