Just wanted to say hi, found this forums and so glad I did.

I play the accordion in a Scottish Ceilidh band in Aberdeen in the North Eat of Scotland. Currently play and have done for some time an ElkaVox 83 which I love as an accordion although the electronics are worse than crap but it is midi'd so I dont bother with them at all.

Looking forward to some nice accordion craic!

Hi. Welcome to the forum. Indeed I agree, those 80s electronics sounds are pretty dire. I have the same issue with my Hohner but it doesn't have midi so I just see it as a regular Atlantic model with a bank of redundant switches.

They are proper awful and to be honest hardly any of them work. The down side I have is the internal mics and midi is all powered from the Elka's MASSIVE generator that I have to lug about all the time. Its too expensive to get the box re-midi and new mics in them unfortunately just would not be worth it.

Welcome Derek. Lovely piece, Sarahs Song, can't help on the dots I'm afraid. I'd like to see them, too, if you find copy.

Cheers SoulSaver. Its actually Derek funny screen name I know. yeah sarah's song is lovely. Helps that Cunningham plays it with so much feeling I think

Welcome-

I also have an elkavox 83 and ran into the same issue as you with needing the generator if you want the mics powered.
My solution was to get one of the MIDI conversion systems. Either the one from asimov electronics (UM83X or some such number) or the ek2000 system. Both of these power the mic and have a midi output.

I have often thought of just wiring a 9v into the system, but since the asimov box is small enough I haven't needed to.

Hi Fjsys,

The accordion has already got a conversion. Can I tap into that without having to get the whole midi revamped?

If the conversion was only in the generator then yes.
Those systems replace the big tone generator completely and remove all of the original sounds. (and some of what the switches on the front do)
They just require an unmodified elkavox 83 accordion itself.

They plug into the accordion with the same strange connector that the current generator plugs in, but now the mics are powered and you only have midi out.

Amazing information Fjsys. Thank you. I am going to have a look into it!

Frank Romano of -- http://www.accordiondepot.com/ -- lists the midi retrofit and the part# is E-83 . If you give him a call tell him Jim Dascanio of THE FISARMONICA SHOP recommended you.

Fjsys - is this the place you were talking about http://www.scottishmusiccentre.com/directory/e3324/

Website and email does not seem to work and the phone is engaged all the time. Any idea where else I could buy the conversion or is it cutom made?

Cheers

Derek

That would be the one. It has been a couple of years since I got mine, so I hope that they are still around.

They come up from time to time on ebay and the like secondhand, if you are patient you will find one. (just make sure it is for an 83 or an IORIO H and not a 77 the connectors are different...)

fjsys you are a star! if I can find one you have sorted out my accordion woes for a long long time

Update, Asimov have stopped training. His wife told me he no longer works in accordions and does not think he would fancy a homer. Have emailed Frank Romano to see if he can source the logic system. Not sure I will sleep until I find one of these units!
