Get your fedora hat on and your smokes out for a bit of 'film noir'
Thanks for indulging me...

Got that smokey nocturnal feeling, congrats Terry!

Back in the day, late night jazz club....

The Green Mill is a live jazz music venue in Chicago.
The club dates back to 1910. The choice of the name "Green Mill" was inspired by the infamous Moulin Rouge in Paris (French for "red mill") and "green" was chosen to avoid confusion with any establishments in the red light districts around town.

The most interesting history of the club for me is its association with AL Capone during the Prohibition era of the 1920s in the US.

Some of the interior of the club dating back to its origins has not changed and greatly contributes to a 'smokey nocturnal' feeling. Often during the late hours, jazz musicians from around the city will show up for an impromptu session of music.

The Green Mill and some of the adjacent properties are interconnected by underground tunnels and rooms.
Supposedly during Prohibition, illicit activities - alcohol, gambling and prostitution - took place in these buildings' basements, out of sight of the police(wink) and the general public.

Reminds me of another story: A friend purchased a home that was built during Prohibition. It was in rough shape and required removing lots of old junk from the home. In the basement he found a room, or so he thought. until he started removing garbage. The room was actually a tunnel from the basement to the detached garage. At that time he could not understand why someone would have a tunnel like this.

He figured out why during the summer. During the hot humid weather, the basement, but in particular the tunnel, had a strong alcohol smell.
My friend thinks that his house was used to move illegal liquor into the neighborhood. That would also explain the many broken booze bottles that he found in the basement and tunnel earlier, while he was cleaning out the house.
