Dominguinhos - Brazilian king of accordion music

Thanks Ignacchiti, Dominguinhos is (was) awesome as these clips show. You might have to fight off a few people who think Gonzaga was the King (Rei do Baião) but I will not argue with you on that topic, not being a zero sum kind of guy.

Thst said, do you play forró or baião or gaúcha or gaita or ????? I play O Que Tem a Rosa but that's about it (and Asa Branca of course). How's the accordion scene in Porto Alegre?

True, there may be more than one king, let them duel among themselves and we just sit back and enjoy 🤣

Porto Alegre is the literal capital of the gaucho state! Accordion music is a bit stronger in the suburbs and countryside though, in small towns.

Porto Alegre hosts a big Gaucho Center (called CTG) though with lively music:

As for me, I have never ever played gaucho or any of the styles you mentioned - I just do jazz, and sometimes a bit of bossa nova.
Gaucho and other Brazilian styles you mentioned are technically difficult on the fingers (maybe too fast and rhythmically unusual for me) but I find them too simple in terms of chord progression. I love me some complex chords (full of 7ths, 9ths, 13ths, etc) and complex chord progression with tons of modulation.

Do you play gaucho, forró, baião, etc. @Tom ?

🤣 Thanks!!!! I get it. I only play polkas under duress..... That said, I'm too dumb for complex chord progressions. I only play traditionl/folk music. I play "Asa Branca" (baião) and "O Que Tem a Rosa" (gaúcha). Thes are the only two Brazilian tunes I am actively playing. We get "J1" workers here for the summers, often including those from Brazil. I put on my cangaciero and play Asa Branca and it blows their mind!!!!!

I copied this version:

....and used this tutorial:

Got a "this video is private" message for the tutorial 🙁
That’s weird. It was ok yesterday. Too many accordionists must have tried it!🤣🤣 She must be trying to monetize her channel? I don’t know. Fortunately I have downloaded it, it’s a good tutorial. Here’s Estavo Ewald’s version….
