Do you think this is a good accordion for a beginner?

It looks like it may be broken now. I would pass on that one.
Is there some other local classifieds you can look at? Ebay is a terrible place to look for an accordion unless you know what you are doing. (And even then it is a gamble)

That one looks better, but again I would advise caution. Try to see if he has a return policy before buying it, if you are set on that one.
Also contact him and see if he is willing to play it over skype for you.

Couple of points that I always use for buying an accordion from ebay.
avoid sellers that do not play themselves or are selling it for someone else.
avoid ones that do not have reed pictures.
avoid pawn shops.
avoid musty looking accordions. (the first one looked like it had mold on the bellows.)

From my ebay purchases I have come to the opinion that everything on ebay is broken in some way (otherwise they would sell it locally)

A suggestion, why don't you post in the accordions wanted section with your location and see if anyone here has something to sell you.

what area are you in?

also that weltmeister leather valves look in need of attention but i would like someone with real experience to check :) (i have been trying to restore a vintage pa not too dissimilar to that old hohner for 3 weeks)

but yes it is a much better one to learn on in general than the beaten up hohner

you need to research all the different types (ideally actually holding some)and get an idea of what you would like and need?

I have a Hohner Tango II and love the sound of it - but it's not making any sound right now, as it needs major repairs. We only paid £10 for it though, and I wouldn't recommend spending more than that, as any Tango II is going to be at least 70 years old and therefore likely to need major repairs and tuning.

The Weltmeister is a better bet, but it's in Bulgaria... Where are you based, hadisami?

Often old accordions cost a lot more to repair than what they are worth. I always feel suspicious of old accordions unless its a good model of a good make that has been serviced regularly.

I live in Berkshire, England, and there is an accordion shop near me, but most of the accordions are new and even the second hand ones are over £600! I'm young, i don't have this kind of money! The thing is, i'm not entirely sure what bass accordion to get. I hear that beginners should start with 48, but people say that you can quickly be in need for something larger, so should i be thinking around the 80-96 ones??

The existence of 48 bass accordions is strong evidence that they're good enough -- for someone. The best way to figure out what you need might be to learn how the stradella system works, and what that means for the kind of music you expect to be playing. You'll have to work that out anyway, so it isn't time wasted by any means. Also bearing in mind that bass size is to some degree a surrogate for keyboard size (which has a greater effect on weight because a longer keyboard actually adds reeds, where a bigger stradella panel usually just adds some rods connecting to the same old bass reeds), so you can also ask yourself how many notes you need there.

Ah yes...this approach ....this particular model is so rare that I have one !! It is a Weltmeister Stella.....not to be confused with the Chinese variants of the same name which are a bit pants....as are quite a few Chinese built accordions....build quality, quality control etc.etc,etc.....

The Welty is actually not a bad box, not top qulitat ,but not bad .....and at a 100 beer tokens about right priced....ebay is a minefield but I bought mine from Militarism in Bulgaria for about £ 150 including delivery and I have experienced two others from them, both fair for the price.... Ill look for the link.

I think the Chanson is a Chinese one. I tried out a different Chanson model at our local Hobgoblin, and disliked it quite a lot!

The Chanson is Chinese. I would avoid all Chinese accordions. The Weltmeister is an older German model. The person selling it says all the keys and buttons work but seems he does not know if it in tune which can be a problem and could cost more than its vakue to get tuned and checked over. Not as good as the modern Weltmeisters.

My advice is to avoid buying any accordion at this time until you learn what instrument is right for you. Please locate an accordion club or organization in your area and spend some time asking a lot of questions. There are so many choices in sizes, reed configuration, tuning, etc. You will want to be comfortable and happy with the quality and playability of your final choice. Learning to play on a poor instrument is not fun.
Good Luck

Putting it into context....an older Weltmeister at £100 affordable if a slight punt....or a more modern one at about £750 upwards for 60 plus basses....and a pony while we are at it....... .......

As I said before these are not rare boxes. He should know that as he is in Bulgaria, hmmmm maybe offer 80 to 90 squids ....maybe worth a punt

Also check out the reviews and feedback for sellers....are they an instrument specialist ...there are some cheaper dealers overseas...offset slightly by postage prices but on the whole worth checking out.............at the prices you and people like me are forced to consider we have to take a punt .....I did and it paid off....My Weltmeister stella 60 had new bellows, the keyboard side looks like new under the grille (I have not worked up the courage to look in the bass end yet ....still !) and it plays well ....I dont, but it does........

I later next year paid £499 for a Scandalli 80 from The Music Room at Cleckheaton and got an unfettled but luckily good quality if a bit mucky box......its a bit of a gamble, but do some research as mentioned above ....does the ebay dealer have good reviews ....

No connection to these websites just a couple of examples.....

Second one looks a bargain but from Bulgaria. I'll be after a cheap one to tinker with, too. It sold, was it you? Let us know what it's like. :)

Signs that it has been well used - not necessarily problem... & looks like a new bellows. It look like it could do with a some valves replaced. Fairly high courier cost from Bulgaria.... are you sure he agreed £115 inc post- it's still listed?

It doesn't necessarily look like a bargain for you if you get that valve work done (£75ish) and it looks a dead loss to him.
What I call a 'lose lose' situation..

60 basses will easily do you a year or two - and, think about this, will be sellable if you start with a decent one. :)

I have to say that I disagree a bit (sorry peeps). £ 115 INCLUDING postage in my book is a steal if it is in fair for the price nick....and sorry, but 60 bass will cover all the basses.... sorry about the pun.... I do not get this more basses is better philosophy personally........but what do I knerr ( bloody ell man Have ernly beeeeen heeer in Nor Thumberland fower munths ).....I love my Welty 60 ....and It came from Bulgari too !!
