This may seem obvious... but are you sure its a waltz? I used to assume that everything in 3/4 was a waltz, until I learned about French dancing, and specifically mazurkas. They have a different emphasis to match the dance step; its quite subtle.

And of course there are many Scottish 3/4 marches, eg. Green Hills of Tyrol.
It would be handy if we could see the written music, then we would have a better idea of how to treat it.

Pipemajor and Anyanka,
There are many examples of this musical figure but the ones I readily have to hand are:
First 7 bars in “Jenny Lind Polka” page 2 in Palmer Hughes Concert Book (Two or Three, don’t remember which), in the ‘Trio’ of “Elsie’s” (in 3/4 time) published in Holland by Muziekultgevert Amsterdam 50 or 60 years ago, and in bar 43 of “Bourrasque” published by Editions Musicales Paul Beuscher Paris 1954.<EMOJI seq="1f642">?</EMOJI>

I should have written “Palmer Hughes Recital Book Three”<EMOJI seq="1f610">?</EMOJI>

Thank you - I only know the Jenny Lind out of those; again, the type of dance will affect how to play the slurs. As a polka, it needs to be quite crisp and jaunty, so Id keep the slurs to a minimum, and use them as contrast to the more staccato notes. Ive not actually seen this notated with slurs, but then folk tunes are usually provided with minimal information on dynamics and articulation, unlike classical pieces!

Anyanka...or anyone....what can you tell me about a Java.... Thanks

Anyanka,
Thanks for your efforts!<EMOJI seq="1f642">?</EMOJI>
Jazz,
I’m pretty sure it’s about an entirely different Elsje!
