In my accordion class we learned about the app “Chet.” At this time it is free on the iPhone App Store, I don’t know about other platforms.

Basically, it’s to help you develop your musical ear so that you can learn to identify intervals, melodies and chords based off a given tonic. You are given a series of notes, and the starting note, and asked to repeat it on a piano keyboard. It starts easy and gets harder.

I’m up to about level 12 of 70. It’s brutally addictive! Will it make you play as well as your hero, Mr/Ms Fill in the Blank? No, but I believe it will help and it sure is fun and better than doom scroll while you are waiting for new posts.

Try it, you’ll like it! And don’t forget the Forum Zoom #10 on Friday, May 3, 2024. Just sayin’

No one has tried Chet? I’m up to Unit 5. I think it’s getting a little easier but still very hard. I generally only get two or three right each time. But I do believe it will be very helpful in the long run. Cool light house!

TOM:
Thank you for your recommendation of trying "CHET".
I got on to it when you first posted, then dropped off for a while, and now back onto it.
You are progressing well with CHET. My progress is very slow. Interestingly, I thought it very simple, and quite basic, but definitely gets to be a challenge.
I'm more of a beginner musician than you, so let me ask a question about CHET.
Do you perfect each exercise before moving on, or just accept mistakes, and move on to the next ?
I've tried both senario's and find that perfecting each exercise before moving works better for me---I think.
Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks Chickers! Yes, I also perfect each exercise. I don’t get them all. I think you get about 5 chances? You start to recognize patterns. I try not to “cheat” by memorizing the notes from the staff displayed. It does get more difficult but hopefully your ear will get better and you can keep up. Good luck!

I made it into Stage 5 and it’s getting even harder. Still better than doom scrolling.

I have just downloaded it and I'm trying it out. I've done level 1 so far. I know people say it gets easier with practice, but I find this sort of thing quite hard. The app seems good though.

A agree. It does get easier. But then the exercises get harder! I learned totally by notes so it’s a new experience to learn by ear, but I think better in the long run. Especially for the goal of ditching the music on gigs. Seems if we can learn to play by ear we can play by listening to the notes “in our head.” Good luck!!!!

I started fiddle lessons with a lady who insists only playing by ear. To the extent that when there were some tunes I wanted to learn she recorded them as MP3 files for me. It does work too, I can play those tunes by ear now, as long as I play them once every couple of weeks.
