Best chair or stool?

Pipemajor,
Thanks ?
A feature of this stool I particularly appreciate is being able to park my left foot on top of the protuberance at the foot of any one of the legs.?

Normally I use a Stakmore chair. It looks like a regular wooden chair with a back and a padded seat, like you might use with your dining room table. But it's foldable so you can store it out of the way, toss it in the back of your car easily, etc.

That said... I played a few gigs at this place that had a chair on the stage already, so that's what I used. It was an old office chair, but the back and arms had been removed (or fell off). The end result was essentially a drum throne on wheels! It was great to have a comfy stool to sit on, but be able to "wheel around" a bit.

Between this thread and a couple of others written a few years ago, I decided to look for a drum throne to use for practice. My wooden desk chair wasn't working out.

Found a DW 5120 tractor-style drum throne at a local guitar shop, bought it and tried it out today. With the adjustable stool, getting to a comfortable height was easy. Thanks for bringing up this discussion again.

I’m finding that a simple straight-backed upright wooden kitchen chair works best for me. I’ve tried using my piano stool, but the chair back really helps with the heavy accordion.

I understand that I am responding to a fairly old thread, but I wanted to thank Pentaprism for his shop-stool recommendation. Without his mentioning it, I certainly would never have thought to shop for a chair at Costco. But I recently bought one (or, should I say ‘two?’) and I must say that I’m liking it. For me, after trying and returning several others, this one might just be the ticket!

You're very welcome, @Scuromondo.

I have 3 of them now. They are also good for concertina and classical guitar.

I discovered it by accident. A few years back, my daughter had a summer internship for a company in Washington DC - where you live, interestingly (we live on the other coast). As a bonus, the company provided an apartment, but unfurnished. Among other "temporary" pieces of furniture she bought were two of these stools from Costco. I bought one after visiting her apartment, and then two more....

After the internship, she "donated" the stools to the company. The last time I heard, they were still using them.

that is a very nice update to an old and tried and true stool design
especially the hydraulic height adj.

i still have a couple of the old "Clutch" type
(leftover and saved from an Auto Parts store)
where you have to pull the seat up hard to release the clutch so it
slides back down, then pull up slowly to the height you prefer

they are a pain to get just right !

there are other, all, modern man-cave type Sports stools with rings for the feet,
but they are not as sturdy as these commercial quality stools

after Covid, i will look in the Costco in Beltsville for one, but
i havn't got my shot in the arm yet, so the closest im getting
to them is the Gas Pumps !

I was not able to find these at the store so I purchased them online. Also, at Costco you can almost never buy one of anything, and so it is with their work stool: I had to buy two of them, even though I need only one. So If you are interested in purchasing the 2nd one from me, let me know; it is still in the box.

OK, I've taken Tom's advice, checked out the Apple App Store and here's my latest effort.
Let's see if it works ?
It seems to have (so far). Fingers crossed ?1602983190225.jpeg

It's certainly beautiful; I just purchased a 'drum throne' that's adjustable up to 26.5 inches, which is perfect for me. It has a padded "motorcycle" seat and works swell. Previously I was sitting a way to low chair and had top of accordion almost up my nose. Now I can hold my accordion in a much better playing position thanks to my new stool.

I was thinking about upgrading my chair. Right now, I am using an old dining room chair. It's a fixed height. For those who have adjustable stools, do you find the optimal height and keep it set, or do you adjust it often? Do you set it up high, or table height?

I have a video where I am sitting on the chair. I am thinking about either standing or getting a higher stool so it looks more uniform from the audience's perspective. Or am I overthinking it? I tend to do that.

nicely done there!

in my opinion you are overthinking: people expect the accordionist sitting

standing up will give you a harder time with dynamics and intricate stuff

or have the guitarist sit down as well

In your case I might upgrade for two reasons:
  • for more portability of a collapsable stool
  • for getting optimal height if you doubt the dining chair is a problem there

Thanks jozz. I prefer to sit. But, then I see people standing with 41/120 instruments and wonder how they do it for multiple sets. Aside from the height, I also want something that I can use for gigging. That way, I don't have to worry if a venue will have an appropriate chair.

Nice sound. Yes, you definitely need to be more front and center. Higher, and maybe closer to the camera. Trio sounds good! Don't those other guys solo?
