2025 Market Goals

Back in the day, I just printed them out myself off my laser printer. If you go to someplace like Staples, they have tons of paper templates that you can purchase and then just print on the pack of sheets (enough for about 200 or so cards), costs used to be around $5.99. Today, that is likely around $10, but its fast, easy and you can design your own in any word processor in about 5 minutes and very little cash.

Thanks Jerry! Probably go with Vista Print where my lovely wife gets hers. Get the poster laminated, some business cards, and wrapping materials for the pottery all at once. Gotta look into it today!!!!

So, stood and played 2 hours at the first market of the season. It was very difficult, cold. It was overcast with 20 mph wind off the lake, so 25 F wind chill (-4C). I had on fingerless kayak gloves but still cold as heck. Had to warm up my hands every couple songs and fumbled around quite a bit. The organizer was very happy that I made the effort so worth it (plus made my standard tip level).

Confirmed once again that I need to play memorized songs. It’s just not fun playing off the sheet music. May be ok for complex jazz, or classical but the folk music not fun. (For me, some of you play all the time from music and more power to you, I’m jealous.).

So back to the grind. Plus 33 songs is not enough for 2 hours. Probably need to get to the ~ 45 level. So, repertoire work continues. Guess it will be a few more weeks before the desert island plan. No rest for the wicked.

Good job, those were some brutal conditions!

Which accordion did you use?

The reason I ask is that one of the beauties of a digital accordion is the vast array of different sounds that it comes with. Where with an acoustic you repeat a song 2 times, you are done... but if you go from accordion to organ to sax to orchestral modes, you've just played it 4 times and doubled the length of time without negative impact... and there was NOTHING more to learn other than what registers/sounds to select. :)

Good idea Jerry! I took my Piatanesi “stroller.” Which is even more limited because only 3 treble voices. I think I will load up the batteries and see how the Roland does. I can always throw the Piatanesi in the car just in case. Plus I could change batteries at the break if I have to. Not much difference in weight or volume. This is a “chill, laid back” venue so big volume is not needed. I’m plenty happy with the Mathis sounds so no problem there. I will need to experiment and get comfortable with the register changes. Don’t know if I have the motivation to figure out and make sets and upgs.. Or backing tracks…..

Backing tracks are not needed, no programming either, just doing a little homework with what sounds work nicely in what combinations and a little practice and you should be good. At least for me, it is 1/10th the effort to document some settings and how to get to them over learning a new piece from scratch... though obviously both should be done in the end, right? :)

The Mathis sets are usually organized in some kind of logical order so in theory one could alternate between 2 sounds twice and get those 4 reps in there without much effort. Two hours is way under what a good set of batteries can do on a single charge (cold conditions aside, cold can lower battery life but in theory still well within the 4-5 hours per set that the 4X should be capable of.)

I think you’re right Jerry, just a metter of getting familiar with where the sounds are, and getting to them. I have some other nice sounds too, just a matter of (re) organizing them since my memory (in the fr4 😊) got scrambled.

to illustrate a method

take a song like Green Onions.. simple standard progression..
once you memorize the iconic bass pattern it is on autopilot
and 4x Upright Bass carries the song..

improv of all types is easy on this song.. listen to various artists
including the original (Booker T) and the glue is just to do one
verse of the actual (iconic) melody liine once every minute or so

now you program 5 shifts identical for bass and chords, but with 5
different treble lead voices.. like one pop organ, one flute, one guitar,
one accordion, one piano

so you play the bass line, pop organ comps chords for a chorus,
second chorus mirrors the bass line, third chorus is the melody,
4th chorus you hit the second shift and improv with the flute
for as long as inspiration strikes, eventually hit the first shift again and
play the melody line on the organ again, maybe ramp up the
melody a second time, hit the 3rd shift and improv a different
blizzard of notes using the guitar sound

see where this is going ? you can do 20 unboring minutes of Green Onion
and keep them smiling

because it is easy to load/save sets of sound setups, one can do a
lot of A B C mirrors for specific songs that makes life easier

For Tom, that would be like 4-5 hours of work for 1 song... too complex. Keeping it simple is very important here... use the Mathis and even the factory sets, spend maybe 5-10 minutes per song to go through the sets, find something appropriate and leverage the existing sounds.

The long method I would suggest, just take 15 minutes, go through all the sounds quickly to get familiar with them, and as you are doing this, you will find that your mind is going to just pop in and say, "hey, that would sound great with "Apple Peaches...", oh, this registration would work with... and so on.

I bet he has 5-10 songs done in the first few minutes. After that, then go by song and find a suitable exiting registration. Keep a paper with the song name and registration, or notate it on the notes.

Tom, if you like a second set of eyes/ears sometimes helps... if you want to do this on a zoom session, I would not mind helping.

Thanks for the advice Ventura and Jerry! I think it’s worth trying to see if I can get this going, even in two weeks. You’re right, I need to familiarize myself more with the existing sounds, and how to get around the sets and upgs. Using the different combinations on separate choruses sounds cool. I could definitely get into playing Green onions.

I think 33 songs are enough for 2 hours if you make enough repeat. I guess you cut the songs early. If you are not in a concert which you are not, you can make a lot of repeats. Good songs always welcome another repeat. Expanding repertoire is always a good thing though. Most of buskers have 5-10 songs (in total) !! ;)

Wind chill affects the player but not the instrument, so the reeds may well refrain from seizing up. As opposed to the fingers…

The pain and suffering we go through for our love of entertaining the general public.................Tom you deserve a medal !!! !!!

Thanks guys! The events in May and October are the worst but we persevere!!!!

It’s true, but I don’t like to repeat songs if I can help it. Playing some songs 4 or 5 times through and I’m ready to move on. Improvised choruses help, as do different registers. I just got some tips from Ventura and Jerry to work on. I’ll probably pick back up a few songs I played last year and have pretty memorized while working on some new ones.

An excellent idea. Right now the concept you need to leverage is increasing numbers with minimal effort/time investment. Let's work on this a little this Sunday. :)

So, I’ve picked out 45 songs for Tuesday. Should get me through two hours = ~ 2.7 minutes per song. Should get me through at a leisurely pace. I’ve got about half memorized and half “sheet music guide”. No sight reading for me!

45 pieces is a nice challenge and you should take breaks too. I always enjoy a 45min play - 15 min break... that way you need a few less songs, people know you are there and with that 45 songs, you can actually go for a longer period of time. Also don't forget to switch registrations more and instead of just playing a song 2 times make it 3 repetitions, that too gets them from 2.7in to over 3 min.

Keep us up to date how it goes!
